Hatun Ronroco

From the Quechua word “hatun” (meaning “big”), this instrument is a rare evolution of the hatun charango, a large-sized variant of the charango originating from Peru and developed by the Peruvian musician Federico Tarrazona.

In this case, however, we are dealing with an even more distinctive variation: an hatun charango tuned a fourth lower, designed to approach the sound and expressiveness of the ronroco, but with a broader and richer structure. To this tuning are added two additional bass courses (A and E), which greatly expand the instrument’s harmonic possibilities, making it extremely versatile.

The stringing is based on mostly single strings, with one octave pair on the central low B course, for a total of 8 strings.
Tuning: B, E, B (octave), G, D, A, E

The construction follows the same philosophy as the Peruvian charango: a laminated body built on a mold, inspired by the baroque guitar, ensuring structural stability and a controlled, well-defined tonal response.

The result is an instrument with a deep, warm, and enveloping voice, a soft attack, and strong expressive potential. Compared to a traditional ronroco, this Hatun Ronroco offers a wider tonal range, especially in the lower register, while maintaining remarkable clarity in the upper voices.

It is an ideal instrument for those seeking new sonic possibilities, perfect for composition, film scoring, advanced accompaniment, and solo performance, where its harmonic richness can truly make a difference.
